When Atreo, a leader in clinical trial management, set out to improve its randomization and trial supply management (RTSM) platform, the challenges were clear. The tool is powerful and offers real benefits to clients. But users faced obstacles with navigation, data clarity, and workflow consistency. Atreo needed a more unified and intuitive experience that prioritized users, especially as the platform expands to support new clients. A more user-friendly interface would be crucial to Atreo’s adoption and growth.

Collaborating with Atreo, we delivered a comprehensive redesign for its RTSM platform—refining its foundations and optimizing workflows to create a seamless, user-friendly experience.

A robust design system as the foundation for success

A detailed audit of Atreo’s key pages and design system identified gaps in usability and visual consistency. Based on our findings, we built a comprehensive design system library, including foundational elements like color and typography as well as reusable web components and higher-level structures such as accordions, dropdowns, and charts. To enhance accessibility, we developed both light and dark modes. This robust system ensures visual and functional consistency across the platform, creating a more immersive and usable brand experience for Atreo’s customers.

Simplifying navigation and workflows

Navigation was one of the digital platform’s biggest obstacles for users, who often had difficulty locating protocols and moving between sections. We streamlined the navigation structure by introducing clear labels and centralized links to key resources like the Help Center, Page Guide, and Help Desk. Account settings were consolidated and visual clutter reduced, giving users more space and a more intuitive experience to focus on tasks in a seamless workflow.

Enhancing data presentation

Improving the presentation of tables of data—a critical element of the platform which supports clinical trials and analysis—offered opportunities for improvement that would add significant value for users. We introduced locked headers and consistent scrollbars to make large datasets easier to read. Subtext was added to provide additional context without cluttering the interface. Alignment, spacing, and hierarchy were refined for better readability. We also grouped search, filter, and sort functions together to simplify workflows, helping users interact with complex data more efficiently and intuitively.

Streamlining filters, sorting, and grouping

Filters, sorting, and grouping were also updated to meet the platform’s extensive data needs while improving usability. We introduced a centralized “customize view” drawer, allowing users to filter, sort, group, and organize columns in one cohesive interface. Users can save, name, edit, or delete their preferences, and clear indicators show which filters are applied. By unifying these actions and ensuring consistency across pages, users gain precise control over their data, reducing complexity and boosting efficiency.

Redesigning high-traffic areas

Essential pages were redesigned to improve usability. For site summaries, we grouped related details, introduced collapsible sections, and added icons to tabs for easier navigation. Shipment management workflows were simplified using standardized modals, input fields, and dropdowns. The form review process—which had been a significant point of friction for many users—was overhauled to be intuitive and accessible. Together, these changes reduce user errors and help them complete their tasks with confidence and efficiency.
